Missed buses, broken live tracking and long waits are pushing frustrated commuters to the brink.
AS more Malaysians turn to public transport to mitigate the rising cost of living and chronic traffic congestion, a growing chorus of frustration is highlighting the systemic unreliability of the nation’s bus services.
For many, the commute is no longer merely a physical journey; it has become an emotional ordeal characterised by inconsistent schedules and a lack of clear communication that frequently leaves passengers stranded.
The conversation gained momentum following a viral post on Threads by user @gurprxxt_, who detailed a distressing post-work commute involving public transport.
Having finished work at 6pm, she waited for her usual route, which the official app indicated would arrive in 20 minutes.
However, the journey took a confusing turn when the driver performed a large U-turn, returning to the original boarding point.
When the user inquired if the bus was still heading towards the Masjid Jamek LRT station, the driver reportedly replied:
“Oh, you need to get off here and take another bus with the same number.”
The commuter expressed her exasperation at being allowed to board a bus with a misleading route display.
“At that point, it was already getting dark. I was alone, exhausted, and honestly overwhelmed because I just wanted to go home,” she shared.
The ordeal continued when a subsequent bus allegedly failed to stop at the designated area despite passengers waiting.
The user claimed the driver neither slowed down nor checked for commuters, even as they attempted to signal the vehicle at a nearby traffic light.
Other Malaysians quickly flooded the comments to share their own “public transport nightmares”:
User @esther_pui claimed waiting times often exceed an hour, worsened by a “live location” feature that frequently malfunctions, forcing commuters to abandon their journeys.
User @__05yegga alleged that buses regularly ignore scheduled timings. The user further claimed to have seen drivers sleeping during departure times or stopping mid-journey for food and smoke breaks.
Even rail commuters joined in, with user @anonymousnouser noting that daily LRT and MRT travel has become so stressful that the added layer of bus unreliability makes the commute unbearable.
The original poster’s evening was eventually saved by a different driver who offered guidance and a lift to Sogo KL, allowing her to connect to the Bandaraya LRT.
“Thanks to him, honestly, because I was close to crying,” she added, highlighting how much commuters currently rely on the individual kindness of staff rather than a functioning system.
