EU court forces Amazon to comply with digital content rules

BRUSSELS: An EU court has dismissed Amazon’s challenge against the bloc’s digital content law, confirming the tech giant must comply with its strict rules.

The Luxembourg-based General Court ruled that Amazon’s action against its designation as a ‘very large online platform’ was unfounded.

Amazon contested the Digital Services Act, which demands online platforms better protect users and counter the spread of illegal goods and content.

The court found that while the rules interfered with certain freedoms including conducting business, this interference was justified by the law’s objectives.

The DSA imposes tougher rules on platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users in the European Union.

Amazon had accused Brussels of infringing several rights including freedom to conduct business and freedom of expression.

The court specifically addressed Amazon’s challenge to obligations of transparency, cooperation and access to data.

This ruling confirms Amazon’s status among the ‘very large online platforms’ facing enhanced regulatory scrutiny under EU law.
