Malaysia and Turkey explore deeper defence cooperation and tech transfer

Malaysia and Turkey aim to strengthen defence ties through technology transfer, joint development, and local industry involvement beyond traditional procurement.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Turkey possess significant potential to enhance strategic defence cooperation through technology transfer, joint development, and local industry involvement.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin expressed confidence in this potential following a meeting with Turkish defence technology company ASELSAN’s leadership.

The delegation was led by ASELSAN CEO and President Ahmet Akyol and Turkish Ambassador to Malaysia Emir Salim Yüksel.

Mohamed Khaled emphasised the need for Malaysia to move beyond traditional procurement models.

He advocated for improved procurement strategies focusing on long-term cooperation that builds national supply chains.

“This approach strengthens local industry collaboration and opens up wider market opportunities,” he stated in a Facebook post.

Earlier, Mohamed Khaled and Turkey’s Minister of National Defence Yasar Guler held a four-point meeting during the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 in Istanbul last July.

Their discussion focused on identifying appropriate military and defence cooperation that both countries require. – Bernama
