From scoring the winning goal in the inaugural final to guiding Thailand to back-to-back titles as coach, Kiatisuk Senamuang remains one of the defining figures in ASEAN Championship history.
SINGAPORE, June 18: Few figures have left a greater mark on the ASEAN Championship, now known as the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ 2026, than Thailand legend Kiatisuk Senamuang.
Known affectionately as “Zico”, the former striker has played a central role in five of Thailand’s record seven regional titles, first as a player and later as a coach, cementing his place among Southeast Asian football’s all-time greats.
Kiatisuk announced himself on the regional stage in the inaugural tournament in 1996 when, at just 23, he scored the decisive goal against Malaysia in the final before celebrating with his trademark backflip.
His thunderous strike past Malaysian goalkeeper Khairul Azman Mohamed remains one of the most iconic moments in the competition’s history.
Former Thailand team manager Thawatchai Sajakul, who oversaw the side during that maiden triumph, described Kiatisuk as the country’s greatest modern-era footballer.
“He is the best player Thailand has produced in the modern era,” said Thawatchai.
After missing the 1998 edition, in which Thailand surrendered the crown to Singapore, Kiatisuk returned in 2000 to inspire the War Elephants to another title on home soil.
Goals against Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines helped Thailand reach the semi-finals, where he netted in a 2-0 victory over Malaysia before the Thais defeated Indonesia 4-1 in the final.
His performances earned him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
Kiatisuk captained Thailand to another championship in 2002 under English coach Peter Withe, scoring a hat-trick against Laos during the group stage before the team defeated Indonesia on penalties in the final.
He later finished runner-up in 2007 before moving into coaching.
After Thailand endured a decade without regional glory, Kiatisuk returned to lead the national team and immediately restored their dominance, guiding them to the title in 2014 with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Malaysia.
He followed that success with another triumph in 2016, as Thailand edged Indonesia in the final to secure back-to-back championships.
From his famous backflip celebrations to his achievements on the touchline, Kiatisuk’s influence has become inseparable from the tournament itself.
The ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ 2026, which marks the competition’s 30th anniversary, will be held from July 24 to Aug 26.
