Barrier-free ANPR toll system hits 99.1% detection success rate in pilot

Malaysia’s barrier-free ANPR toll pilot achieved a 99.1% number plate detection rate as the system expands to more PLUS Expressway locations.

PETALING JAYA: The barrier-free toll system based on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has achieved a 99.10% vehicle number plate detection success rate during its public pilot on the PLUS North-South Expressway, the Works Ministry said.

In a written parliamentary reply, Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Open Payment Toll System (SPT ANPR), implemented by PLUS Malaysia Berhad, is currently being tested on the Hutan Kampung–Sungai Dua stretch of the North-South Expressway. The pilot, which began in January 2026, aims to assess the system’s effectiveness and performance under actual traffic and toll operating conditions.

“As of May 2026, the system had recorded 32,856 registered users, with an average of 127,227 successful transactions per month.

“Based on the findings from the public pilot testing, the vehicle number plate detection success rate reached up to 99.10%,” he said.

Nanta added that the failure rate for number plate recognition was around 0.90%, mainly due to factors such as non-standard number plate formats, damaged plates and weather conditions, among others.

He also said the public pilot for SPT ANPR had since been expanded to the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE), involving the Kubang Semang and Lunas toll plazas, as well as the Jitra Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway from June 25, 2026.

“The implementation of SPT ANPR is also being planned for expansion to the Juru–Skudai stretch of the North-South Expressway, where testing and system certification are currently being carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and PLUS Malaysia Berhad,” he added.

Nanta said a public pilot involving registered highway users is expected to begin soon after the completion of the testing and certification process.

He was responding to a question from Afnan Hamimi Datuk Taib Azamudden (Alor Setar-PN) on the implementation status of the system, including its recognition rate and failed transactions reported by users.
