Rainfall exceeding tropical storm Senyar levels triggers flooding in Melaka, with over 100mm recorded and three relief centres opened.
MELAKA: Heavy rainfall in Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah, exceeding the rainfall recorded during tropical storm Senyar late last year, was among the factors that caused flooding in both districts today.
Melaka Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) director Mohd Adnan Ahmad Fauzi said that as of 2.30 pm today, the highest cumulative rainfall, exceeding 100 millimetres (mm), had been recorded in the two districts.
“Rainfall recorded during tropical storm Senyar on Nov 28 last year was 147 mm. However, rainfall recorded today at four rain gauge stations in the two districts ranged from 132 mm to 158 mm,” he said in a statement today.
He said Solok Duku rainfall station in Alor Gajah recorded 150 mm, followed by the UiTM Lendu rainfall station with 141 mm, while in Melaka Tengah, the Sungai Udang Agricultural Centre rainfall station recorded 158 mm and the Bertam Hulu Dam rainfall station 132 mm.
As of 4 pm today, three temporary relief centres (PPS) had been opened to accommodate flood evacuees from 22 affected areas in Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah.
Of the total, three flood-hit areas were in Alor Gajah, while the remaining 19 were in Melaka Tengah following more than six hours of continuous heavy rain since 6 am.
The relief centres comprise the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) in Masjid Tanah, which is housing 15 victims from five families, while the other two relief centres in Melaka Tengah – Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Bertam Ulu and Japerun Pantai Kundor – are still receiving evacuees.
