Syed Saddiq says the six-year legal ordeal reinforces his belief that justice and truth will ultimately prevail after the Federal Court upholds his acquittal

PUTRAJAYA: After a six-year legal battle, Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the ordeal had reinforced his belief that justice and truth would ultimately prevail.

Syed Saddiq, 33, who performed a sujud syukur (prostration in gratitude) with his family after the court acquitted him of all charges, said today’s decision had strengthened his resolve to continue defending the independence of the country’s justice institutions, which he described as the foundation of Malaysia’s strength.

“I have always held firmly to the principle that courage comes from being in the right, and that conviction has brought us to this day. Six years is a long time. It has affected not only me, but especially my parents, family, friends, supporters and the political landscape,” he told reporters at the Palace of Justice lobby here.

The Federal Court today upheld Syed Saddiq’s acquittal on four charges of abetting criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering involving funds belonging to Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada).

Syed Saddiq said his experience of facing criminal charges over the past six years had been an invaluable lesson.

“Even when we are faced with circumstances that seem hopeless, or when there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel, we should never compromise our principles, integrity or dignity for an easy way out. Ultimately, we must place our trust in God and in the institutions that make this country great,” he said.

The former youth and sports minister also said he wanted to take some time away from politics to focus on his family and put his personal affairs in order.

“I have never left MUDA, but as for my political future and plans, I think I will take some time. Today, I want to spend as much time as possible with my family and sort out my personal life.

“I have to attend Parliament sitting, and I will head there after this, but I do want to hold a gathering, especially for the people of Muar,” he said, adding that his parents had given him the green light to proceed with his wedding plans.

Meanwhile, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, counsel for Syed Saddiq, expressed his appreciation to the legal team that handled the case.

“We are grateful to the panel of judges for today’s decision. We also thank YB Syed Saddiq and his family for placing their trust in us,” the lawyer said.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, when contacted, said the prosecution accepted and respected the court’s decision.

“The prosecution has yet to decide whether to file a review of today’s decision, as it is still too early. We will await the Attorney General’s decision,” he said.
