JKDNKA to sustain nationwide operations against cross-border smuggling

JKDNKA will continue nationwide border operations to combat smuggling, illegal migration and cross-border crimes involving controlled goods.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman’s Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) will continue conducting coordinated operations across Malaysia’s land borders, territorial waters and airspace to combat smuggling and other cross-border offences.

Its director, Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said the department has about 25,000 officers and personnel, with both planned and ad hoc operations carried out in collaboration with other police units and enforcement agencies.

He said the General Operations Force (PGA) had prevented subsidised and controlled goods, including diesel, petrol, cooking oil, sugar, flour and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), from being smuggled out of the country under Ops Tiris.

“This is among the main responsibilities of JKDNKA, not only in the north but also along the East Coast, from the Kelantan–Sungai Golok border area to Padang Besar in Perlis.

“The same responsibilities are carried out in Sabah and Sarawak through the Sabah and Sarawak Brigades,” he told a press conference today.

His remarks followed reports that the PGA Northern Brigade recorded 862 cross-border crime cases involving seizures worth RM77.27 million between 2023 and June this year.

Mohd Yusri said cooperation within the police force, as well as among enforcement agencies, had helped prevent controlled goods and other assets from being lost through illegal cross-border activities.

He said JKDNKA personnel are also responsible for safeguarding the country’s borders, territorial waters and entry points against undocumented migrants, smuggling and other activities that could result in revenue leakages.

Mohd Yusri described JKDNKA as the police force’s paramilitary arm and said its personnel require strong physical and mental endurance to operate in challenging environments.

He said these capabilities were among those assessed during the department’s four-day obstacle course competition, which involved 320 personnel from 20 teams.

Participants completed 14 checkpoints designed to test their physical endurance, mental resilience, tactical skills, teamwork and ability to make decisions under pressure.

The competition involved personnel from various JKDNKA formations, including the Special Action Unit, the 69 Commando and PGA brigades.

Mohd Yusri said a member of the Sabah Brigade won the individual category, ahead of participants from the 69 Commando and the Special Action Unit.

He said the result demonstrated that personnel from other formations could perform at a level comparable to elite units with sufficient training and preparation.
