JBPM receives three reports of tremors at buildings in Kajang, Subang Jaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan after a 5.7-magnitude quake in North Sumatra.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) received three reports of tremors felt at buildings in Kajang, Subang Jaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan following an earthquake in North Sumatra at 12.18 pm today.
Selangor JBPM assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar, when contacted, said the first report was received at 12.31 pm involving the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) building, followed by a second report at INTI International College Subang in Jalan SS15 at 12.40 pm.
He said teams from the Kajang and Subang Jaya stations sent to the locations confirmed that the buildings were safe for occupation after thorough inspections found no cracks.
The Kuala Lumpur JBPM also received an emergency call at 12.32 pm regarding tremors at Menara B2 Maju Link, Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2, Bandar Tasik Selatan, and deployed a team from the Sungai Besi station to the scene.
It said in a statement that, upon arrival, the team found that almost all occupants had evacuated the building and gathered at a safe area as a precaution after feeling tremors lasting about 15 seconds.
“The fire and rescue team conducted a thorough inspection of the building structure and found no cracks or structural damage. The building is in good condition and safe for occupation,” it said.
Meanwhile, social media platforms, especially Threads, were flooded with posts from users sharing their experiences after feeling tremors in several areas around Shah Alam and seeking confirmation from others.
A Threads user, ‘nabilaishah’, who was in Section 26, shared a brief post about the tremors before the situation returned to normal a few minutes later.
A similar experience was shared by ‘nadiaxzailan’, who only realised the tremors were caused by an earthquake after checking with her colleagues and other social media users.
“While I was busy working, the table suddenly started shaking. I initially thought it was just my imagination before asking my colleagues and other social media users about it,” she said.
The epicentre of the quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, was about 55 km southwest of Langsa, Indonesia.
