THE moment my plane touched down in Koh Samui, I knew this island was going to surprise me. It was not just the turquoise waters or swaying coconut palms that caught my attention – it was the airport itself.
Tiny, charming and unlike any airport I had ever experienced, Samui International Airport immediately set the tone for the journey ahead. There were no overwhelming crowds or endless queues, everything moved at a relaxed island pace, offering the first glimpse of the slower rhythm that defines Koh Samui.
Over the next five days, I discovered two completely different sides of the island through two luxury resorts – SAii Koh Samui Villas and Santiburi Koh Samui.

Watching visitors unwind to timeless classics as gentle waves rolled onto the shore perfectly captured the laid-back spirit of Koh Samui. The evenings became equally memorable, with fire dance performances by the beach, DJs accompanied by saxophone performances and happy hour sessions that transformed the shoreline into a vibrant yet relaxed social space.
Mornings that begin with purpose
One of the highlights of my stay was joining the sunrise Pilates session. There was something incredibly calming about beginning the day with gentle stretches as the first rays of sunlight appeared over the ocean.
The instructor was encouraging and welcoming, making the session enjoyable regardless of experience level. Instead of rushing through breakfast and planning a packed itinerary, mornings at SAii encouraged guests to reconnect with themselves first.
It was wellness without pressure – a refreshing reminder that holidays do not always need to be filled with endless activities. After just two days, I realised SAii was more than just a resort. Discovering a different side of Koh Samui at Santiburi
Leaving SAii felt bittersweet, but arriving at Santiburi Koh Samui revealed an entirely different personality of the island. Where SAii was peaceful, contemporary and designed for those seeking tranquillity, Santiburi radiated timeless Thai elegance. The resort’s traditional architecture, expansive tropical gardens and lotus ponds immediately created a classic luxury atmosphere.
Families filled the pathways, children laughed by the pools and the entire resort carried a warm, welcoming energy. Speaking with the resort manager offered an interesting insight into Santiburi’s loyal following. Many guests travel from Germany, Switzerland and the United States, often staying for 10 days or longer. After spending just a short time there, it became easy to understand why. Santiburi has a comforting familiarity that makes visitors feel instantly at home.
Wellness, culture and culinary excellence
Thailand is famous worldwide for its massages, and Santiburi certainly lived up to that reputation.
My spa treatment was both therapeutic and intense. Although my muscles felt sore the following day, the experience was completely worth it. It was the kind of treatment that leaves you feeling refreshed long after it ends. The culinary experience was equally impressive. Dinner at Sala Thai showcased authentic Thai cuisine prepared with remarkable attention to detail.
Each dish highlighted fresh local ingredients and paired beautifully with carefully selected beverages. For someone who enjoys discovering local flavours while travelling, it became one of the most memorable dining experiences of the trip.
The resort also offers guests the opportunity to participate in Thai culinary classes, and ingredients are harvested directly from the chef’s own herb and chilli garden before being transformed into authentic local dishes. It is experiences like these that allow travellers to understand a destination beyond its beaches.
Adventures beyond the resort
Santiburi perfectly balances relaxation with exploration. One afternoon, I visited an elephant café located about 30 minutes from the resort, where I enjoyed lunch while watching rescued elephants roam peacefully nearby. Back at the resort, I joined fruit carving and kombucha-making workshops, learning how simple ingredients such as papayas and cucumbers could be transformed into beautiful floral designs while creating personalised kombucha blends.
Perhaps the most unforgettable experience, however, was the Santiburi Explorer Sundown Cruise. As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, we sailed across the Gulf of Thailand with refreshing drinks and desserts before arriving at Fisherman’s Village.
The evening continued with a stroll through the bustling night market, sampling local delicacies and browsing handcrafted souvenirs beneath glowing lanterns. It was the perfect ending to a day that blended luxury with authentic local experiences.

Whether it is enjoying quiet moments beside a private pool, watching sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand or connecting with local culture, Koh Samui has a way of making every traveller feel exactly where they are meant to be.
