Two Bosnian climbers killed, three missing on Russia’s highest peak

Two Bosnian climbers died and three are missing after bad weather on Mount Elbrus, Russia’s highest peak, rescuers said.

MOSCOW: Two Bosnian climbers died and three were missing in bad weather on Russia’s highest mountain, Mount Elbrus, authorities and state media said Sunday.

Seven people made an attempt Saturday on the 5,642 metre high peak in the Russian Caucusus, but one returned to base to report two people were sick, a prosecutor in Bardino-Balkaria said. A rescue operation found two bodies and was looking for three more climbers, the prosecutor added.

Tass news agency said that two of the seven had been rescued but that the bodies of the two dead had not been brought down because of bad weather. Bosnia’s Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic confirmed reports of the deaths which he called “a major tragedy”.
