Chief Minister said Sukan Melaka 2026 drew nearly 10,000 participants and produced 492 athletes for SUKMA
MELAKA: Nearly 10,000 participants took part in Sukan Melaka 2026, which featured nine main events contested at the state constituency level from May 24 until yesterday.
Melaka chief minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, said the fourth edition of the state games included events such as football, sepak takraw, netball, basketball, futsal, badminton, snooker, dam aji and konda kondi.
He said Sukan Melaka has grown into a wave that stretches across the entire state, uncovering new talent, fuelling healthy competition and uniting the whole Melaka family.
“Through the continued development of sports that we have set in motion, 492 athletes have been selected to don the state jersey and carry Melaka’s challenge at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which will be held in Selangor.
“This is the outcome we desire. To produce champions from the people’s courts and to raise the name of Melaka from every state constituency,” he said at the prize presentation ceremony of Sukan Melaka 2026 Chief Minister’s Cup and the launch of the Paya Rumput Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) at Stadium Hang Jebat here last night.
Also present were state senior exco for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management and Paya Rumput assemblyman Datuk Rais Yasin, and state exco for Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Datuk VP Shanmugam.
Ab Rauf said the celebration of success should not end with medals and trophies. Instead, it must be carried forward by the state government’s commitment to honing every talent, guiding every athlete and giving every potential the room to go further.
To that end, he said that this year alone, the state government has allocated more than RM10 million to upgrade facilities and develop new sports infrastructure across the state.
“We are upgrading badminton halls, building archery ranges, and improving community sports facilities in every state constituency. One by one, we are implementing these projects to give people access to better sports facilities.
“I want every young person, whether in villages, housing estates, or every corner of the state, to be given the space and the arena to showcase their abilities and prove their potential,” he said.
