PH candidate Dr Azizul Hakim offers free health check-ups to voters in Rantau while proposing development plans
SEREMBAN: Armed with both campaign leaflets and a stethoscope, Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Rantau state seat, Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi, is offering free health check-ups to voters as he goes door to door throughout the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election campaign.
The 35-year-old doctor said the initiative allows him to engage more closely with voters, particularly senior citizens and those with chronic illnesses, while listening firsthand to their healthcare concerns.
“While interacting with residents and listening to their concerns, I also conduct health checks, review their medications, and ensure that bedridden patients do not miss their hospital appointments,” he told Bernama here today.
Dr Azizul Hakim, a private medical practitioner who owns a clinic in Senawang, said the services provided under the Doktor Rakyat (People’s Doctor) programme are not merely an election gimmick but a continuation of the community welfare efforts he has been carrying out.
He said that if given the mandate by Rantau voters, the father of five hopes to expand the mobile medical unit service to every residential area and village to ensure that no one in need is left behind in accessing basic healthcare services.
Touching on his development vision for the Rantau state constituency, which has some 34,831 voters, Dr Azizul Hakim said one of his priorities is to empower young people economically by establishing a small industry hub for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates to start businesses such as automotive workshops and food processing enterprises.
For the Sendayan area, he proposed an affordable housing initiative through the construction of Rumah Harapan, priced between RM150,000 and RM200,000, specifically for second- and third-generation Felda Sendayan settlers who have yet to own a home.
Beyond housing, Dr Azizul Hakim said he also aims to strengthen public transport, increase the number of schools through the Ministry of Education (MOE), and ease traffic congestion by proposing the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart traffic lights.
In the upcoming state election, Dr Azizul Hakim faces a straight fight against incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is also the Foreign Minister and Negeri Sembilan Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman.
Meanwhile, Armed Forces veteran Rahman Hassan, 76, said second- and third-generation Felda settlers need more affordable homes in Sendayan that are comfortable and conducive to family living, in line with the area’s rapid development, which has made it an increasingly popular place to live, including among residents from other parts of Negeri Sembilan.
Asilah Samad, 37, said that as a Sendayan resident, she has witnessed the area’s rapid growth in terms of residential, commercial and industrial development.
“However, as the area continues to grow, public amenities must also be upgraded to meet the needs of residents, including the widening of roads in areas that frequently experience traffic congestion.
“I also believe more educational facilities, such as schools and kindergartens, are needed to cater to the growing population here. Safety measures, including the installation of street lights, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations, and increased security patrols, should also be given due attention,” Asilah said.
Early voting for the Negeri Sembilan state election has been set for tomorrow (July 28), while polling day is on Aug 1.
