A series of earthquakes hit the Philippines, Tonga and Vanuatu, with tremors reaching magnitude 5.3 and prompting seismic monitoring

BEIJING: A series of earthquakes struck the Philippines, Tonga and Vanuatu Islands, reported Xinhua.

In Mindanao, Philippines an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 jolted the area at 2306 GMT on Monday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10 kilometres (km), was initially determined to be at a latitude of 7.70 degrees north and a longitude of 126.74 degrees east.

In Tonga, an  earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 jolted south of the country at 2312 GMT on Monday, the United States (US) Geological Survey said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at a latitude of 24.78 degrees south latitude and a longitude of 175.26 degrees west.

Meanwhile, in Vanuatu, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 jolted the archipelago at 2010 GMT on Monday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at a latitude of 14.52 degrees south and a longitude of 168.07 degrees east.
