Trump endorses right-wing candidate in Honduras election

US President Donald Trump backs Nasry Asfura in Honduras’ presidential race, pledging to fight “narcocommunists” together

WEST PALM BEACH: US President Donald Trump has endorsed right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura in Honduras’ upcoming presidential election.

Trump declared the two could collaborate against the region’s “narcocommunists” in a Wednesday social media post.

“The only real friend of Freedom in Honduras is Tito Asfura,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, using the politician’s nickname.

“Tito and I can work together to fight the Narcocommunists, and bring needed aid to the people of Honduras,” he added.

The 67-year-old construction magnate and former Tegucigalpa mayor faces a tight three-way race against a leftist lawyer and fellow right-wing TV host.

Trump compared Honduras’ situation to Venezuela, where he hasn’t ruled out military intervention while maintaining dialogue possibilities with leftist President Nicolas Maduro.

“Will Maduro and the narco-terrorists seize another country?” he wrote regarding the Sunday vote.

Honduras ranks among Latin America’s most violent nations due to gang-dominated drug trafficking and organized crime.

Trump considers Latin America within the US sphere of influence and has pursued markedly interventionist policies there.

He consistently links US aid to government compliance and personal relationships with leaders while employing military pressure.
