Perak launches microchipping and mapping system for stray animals
IPOH: The Perak state government is implementing microchipping and a Feeders Mapping System to address stray animal issues sustainably.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said these data-driven initiatives will enable more effective enforcement against irresponsible pet owners.
“The microchipping programme will reduce incidents of animal abandonment through better tracking,” she told the State Legislative Assembly.
She added that amendments to the Dog Licencing By-Laws are underway to encourage pet neutering through a graduated fee structure.
Sandrea was responding to Hashim Bujang (PN-Bukit Chandan) who inquired about new policies for stray animal management.
The Feeders Mapping System coordinates individuals who feed stray animals through community-based mapping.
“This network allows feeders to become the government’s eyes and ears for quicker complaint response,” she explained.
Feeders will provide more accurate population data as part of a comprehensive solution rather than working alone.
Under the Perak Pawsitive Initiative subsidised spaying campaign, 504 dogs and 376 cats were neutered as of August 17.
Local authorities have issued 567 dog licences, indicating increased responsible pet ownership.
