ARAU: The Ministry of Education will ensure the welfare and well-being of the school-going children of late Astro Awani journalist Mohamad Asri Shafii.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed deep sadness over the passing of the 49-year-old Perlis correspondent yesterday.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mohamad Asri Shafii… may they be granted strength and patience in facing this difficult time,” she told reporters after visiting a temporary relief centre at SK Changkat Jawi today.
Fadhlina recalled Mohamad Asri’s constant presence covering her visits to Perlis.
She handed contributions to the journalist’s family through Perlis Journalists Association president Syed Azlan Sayid Hizar.
Mohamad Asri was found unconscious by the roadside along Jalan Behor Pulai at 7.20 am yesterday.
He had reportedly been pushing his car after it became stranded in floodwaters.
Kangar district police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said witness accounts indicated Mohamad Asri was driving when his Honda City got stuck.
The journalist is believed to have suffered a heart attack while returning home from covering flood evacuation operations in Hat Yai.
He is survived by his widow Norhanani Ahmad, 48, and six children aged between 11 and 20.
Two children are pursuing studies at UiTM Shah Alam and Kolej Pertanian Bukit Tangga in Bukit Kayu Hitam.
