Flood evacuee numbers drop in most states but rise in Perak and Selangor

Flood evacuees decrease in Terengganu while increasing in Perak and Selangor, with 45 relief centres still active across affected states.

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in several states has declined in line with improving conditions, but figures in Perak and Selangor have risen as of 3 pm today.

In Terengganu, the number of evacuees dropped to 8,345 people (2,490 families) compared with 9,584 people at midday.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) InfoBencana portal, Kuala Terengganu recorded the highest number of evacuees with 1,670 people, followed by Kemaman (1,667), Marang (1,536), Kuala Nerus (1,335), Setiu (1,039), Dungun (711) and Hulu Terengganu (356), while in Besut, the last relief centre was closed after all evacuees returned home.

In Perak, the number of flood victims increased again this afternoon to 6,440 people (2,006 families) seeking shelter at 45 relief centres, compared with 6,173 people (1,903 families) reported earlier.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the weather in 12 districts in the state is forecast to be fine at night, while several districts, such as Manjung, Perak Tengah, Muallim and Kinta, are expected to experience rain in the afternoon.

The number of flood evacuees in SELANGOR has also increased to 4,458 people (1,224 families), up from 4,366 (1,208 families) at midday.

According to the JKM’s InfoBencana portal, 19 relief centres remain open in four districts, namely Sepang (nine), Kuala Langat (six), Sabak Bernam (three) and Klang (one).

States showing a downward trend include Kedah, where the number of flood victims dipped slightly to 3,295 people (1,020 families) from 3,302 people (1,023 families) at midday.

All evacuees are housed at 14 relief centres in Kubang Pasu and Kota Setar.

In Perlis, the number of flood victims also fell to 5,246, with three relief centres closed, compared with 6,159 victims at midday.

Based on data from the State Disaster Management Secretariat as of 4 pm, 21 relief centres are still operating to house all evacuees in Padang Besar, Arau and Kangar.

In Negeri Sembilan, the JKM’s InfoBencana portal reported that the number of evacuees placed at five relief centres has declined to 310 people (113 families) as of 3 pm, compared with 373 victims (138 families) earlier.

The flood situation in Kelantan is also improving, with the number of evacuees dropping to 1,906 from 2,152 at midday, involving four affected districts, namely Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Tanah Merah and Gua Musang.

In Pahang, the number of flood victims at relief centres also decreased to 1,855 people (594 families), from 2,268 people (723 families) at midday.

The Raub District Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said six relief centres in the district were fully closed this evening.

In Melaka, only four relief centres remain operational after two were closed this evening.

The number of evacuees there also dropped to 111 people (27 families) as of 3 pm, compared with 267 victims (76 families) at noon. – Bernama
