NGOs urged to coordinate flood aid through BBNGO to avoid overlap

NGOs in Kelantan are urged to coordinate flood relief through BBNGO to ensure equitable aid distribution and prevent duplication of assistance.

PASIR MAS: Non-governmental organisations in the state have been urged to coordinate their flood relief efforts through the Malaysian NGO Disaster Relief Coalition.

BBNGO Northeast Monsoon Flood Relief Project coordinator Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Rizal Mohd Zain said coordination with agencies like NADMA and the Social Welfare Department is crucial.

He said this is especially important during early evacuations when demand surges and information at relief centres changes rapidly.

Past experience, particularly during the 2014 floods, showed uncoordinated NGOs caused duplication of aid.

Some centres received repeated supplies while other affected families were overlooked, he explained.

Mohd Rizal said BBNGO’s network has helped streamline the distribution of essential items.

Under the first phase of its 2025 programme, it distributed 600 mattresses and 600 batik sarongs.

It also distributed 600 pelikat sarongs, 50kg of fruit and 100 packs of disposable diapers.

The assistance, valued at RM150,000, was funded by Yayasan Hasanah and the SP Setia Foundation.

He added that part of the aid has also been channelled to Perlis through partner NGOs based on the current flood situation. – Bernama
