ABIM urges stronger rights and empathy for persons with disabilities

ABIM proposes six measures to enhance PWD rights in Malaysia, focusing on empathy, employment, education and infrastructure ahead of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has outlined six key recommendations to strengthen the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Its vice-president, Dr Mohamad Haeqal Ishak, said the recommendations aim to foster greater public empathy through education and awareness training.

The proposals also include enhancing employment opportunities in both the government and private sectors.

ABIM is calling for improvements to support systems, particularly in infrastructure and access to Islamic education.

It also advocates expanding the Disability-Inclusive Leadership Programme and increasing academic research on disability issues.

“PWDs remain a group that has yet to receive adequate attention in national policies and development,” Mohamad Haeqal said in a statement.

He expressed concern over the lack of awareness and empathy among Malaysians regarding PWD rights and contributions.

“Gaps in policy, physical infrastructure and facilities continue to restrict their opportunities to grow,” he added.

Mohamad Haeqal said instilling empathy in the young generation is crucial as Malaysia is projected to become an ageing nation by 2030.

This would better support elderly parents who may fall into the PWD category, reducing dependence on institutional care.

ABIM welcomed the Higher Education Ministry’s 2024 implementation of Disability Equality Training and Inclusive Leadership.

“Such efforts should be emulated and expanded by other ministries, agencies and private entities,” he said.

To promote awareness, ABIM will continue its “Cakna OKU: Hidupkan Sunnah yang Dilupakan” campaign.

The campaign aims to nurture humane values through community education and developing inclusive educators.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on Dec 3 every year.
