Police must act proactively to face northeast monsoon season

IGP says police must be ready for monsoon season with adequate assets and personnel, following forecast of five to seven heavy rain episodes

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police must act proactively and effectively to face the Northeast Monsoon season, which is expected to last until March next year.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail issued the directive following a forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department predicting five to seven episodes of heavy rain.

The northern and East Coast states are expected to be particularly affected.

“Conduct observation and coordination continuously to ensure that aid can be channelled to those affected quickly and comprehensively,” he said.

He urged all contingents and formations to ensure their readiness is at an optimum level, including having adequate human capital and assets available at any time.

Mohd Khalid made the remarks during the IGP’s monthly gathering organised by the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department at Bukit Aman.

He also reminded the police force to always prioritise personal safety while on duty and to comply with all standard operating procedures.

The IGP thanked personnel for their successful assignments during the recent Sabah state elections, which proceeded smoothly and peacefully.

On the department’s role, Mohd Khalid said mobile patrol vehicles and Motorcycle Patrol Units conducted over 19,000 arrests for various criminal offences from January to October this year.

“This is a very proud achievement and reflects the high commitment of the department in ensuring public safety,” he said.

The department has procured various logistics assets and the latest technology to improve its operations.

This includes over 1,600 mobile patrol vehicles for faster response and over 1,100 electroshock guns to boost enforcement capabilities and protect personnel safety.

The department also received 7,000 Mobile Card Acceptance Devices to check data with agencies in real-time.

It has acquired over 7,000 body cameras to boost accountability and public trust. – Bernama
