Malaysia’s used cooking oil collection programme expands to 100 Petronas stations nationwide, collecting over 1,800 tonnes since 2023.
BATU PAHAT: The Used Cooking Oil Collection Awareness Programme has reached a major milestone, with its collection network now covering 100 PETRONAS stations nationwide.
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the initiative, a strategic collaboration between the ministry and PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad, has recorded rapid growth since its launch in 2023.
“The programme began in 2023 with just three PETRONAS stations. It has since expanded to 100 stations nationwide. The 100th station to join the initiative was PETRONAS Parit Bintang, which was launched last June 20,” she said at the launch of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) OIL2RECYCLE Programme here today.
Noraini said the initiative had collected 1,887.7 tonnes of used cooking oil as of June 2026, with more than 136,000 members of the public taking part.
“These figures are more than statistics. They represent thousands of people who have changed their habits by collecting used cooking oil instead of discarding it, recognising it as a valuable resource. I believe these achievements can be further strengthened with the participation of higher education institutions such as UTHM,” she said.
Noraini said UTHM’s role as a model campus would help nurture a generation of students who understand the importance of the circular economy while supporting the supply of raw materials for the sustainable fuel industry.
The initiative, she added, also forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the national energy industry supply chain as Malaysia transitions towards cleaner, lower-carbon energy sources.
