The Works Ministry allocates RM10.8 million for slope stabilisation works on roads near Padang Besar, with repairs expected to take up to a year
KANGAR: The Works Ministry has approved an allocation of RM10.8 million for slope repair work at several locations near Padang Besar.
The allocation, approved on December 1, is for work along Jalan Kaki Bukit-Wang Kelian and Jalan Pagar Keselamatan Bukit Kuan Choh.
Preliminary work is expected to begin soon, with major repairs scheduled to start in January.
The overall repair period is estimated to take between six and 12 months, depending on weather and the extent of damage.
The repair work will involve several slope engineering techniques including ‘Tie Back Wall’, ‘Soil Nailing’, and ‘Rockfall Netting’.
These technical approaches were chosen to ensure long-term slope stability and improve route safety for users.
The information was presented by Perlis Public Works Department director Ir. Norikhwan Abu Seman during a site visit.
He was accompanying the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, to the landslide site in Wang Kelian.
Norikhwan stated that Jalan Kaki Bukit–Wang Kelian remains closed to the general public.
Scheduled vehicle movement is permitted for vehicles not exceeding three tonnes from 7 am to 7 pm.
“This route is open only to local residents, vehicles involved in repair work, and tourists or individuals who wish to retrieve stranded vehicles,” he said.
Movement from 7 pm to 7 am is limited to villagers, repair teams, and emergency matters only.
The slope collapsed due to continuous rain on November 23, causing floods in Perlis.
The floods affected areas including Padang Besar, Kangar, and Arau.
The floods fully subsided today with the closure of the last temporary relief centre. – Bernama
