Beijing court orders compensation for MH370 families in eight cases

A Beijing court has ruled in favour of families of eight MH370 passengers, ordering compensation of over 2.9 million yuan per case under the Montreal Convention

BEIJING: A Beijing court has issued rulings on compensation claims filed by families of passengers missing on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

The Beijing High People’s Court stated that eight cases involving eight passengers were adjudicated this time.

The Chaoyang District People’s Court ordered the defendants to compensate the plaintiffs in accordance with the Montreal Convention and relevant Chinese laws.

Compensation awarded covers damages, funeral expenses, emotional distress damages, other losses and related costs.

The total compensation exceeds 2.9 million yuan (about US$410,000) per case.

Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Since 2016, family members of 75 missing passengers have filed 78 lawsuits against Malaysia Airlines and other defendants.

The lawsuits sought damages and called for the establishment of a search and rescue fund, among other demands.

The recent rulings address a portion of these long-standing legal claims by the families. – Bernama-Xinhua
