Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado’s Nobel press conference is postponed but expected later, as questions swirl over her ability to attend the prize ceremony.
OSLO: A press conference with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado has been postponed.
The Nobel Institute said the event, scheduled for Tuesday, should take place later in the day.
“Everything suggests that we will manage to organise a press conference today,” institute spokesman Erik Aasheim told AFP.
The announcement came amid questions over whether Machado could accept her award in person at Wednesday’s ceremony.
The Venezuelan opposition leader is in hiding and risks being declared a “fugitive” by authorities in Caracas.
Her family is already in Oslo for the event.
The press conference is traditionally held by the laureate on the eve of the ceremony.
It is expected to be the 58-year-old’s first public appearance in 11 months.
She last appeared publicly at a demonstration in Caracas on January 9, protesting President Nicolas Maduro’s third-term inauguration.
Machado has accused Maduro of stealing the July 2024 presidential election.
She was banned from standing in that vote, a claim backed by much of the international community.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado on October 10 for her efforts to bring democracy to Venezuela.
She has challenged the rule of Maduro, who has been president since 2013.
