US environmental agency deletes climate change facts from website

The EPA has removed information on human-driven climate change from its website, focusing instead on natural causes, reports say.

WASHINGTON: The US Environmental Protection Agency has deleted facts about human-driven climate change from its official website.

Media reports state the agency altered its webpages in October to focus on “natural processes” like volcanic eruptions and solar activity.

A page titled “Causes of Climate Change” and another tracking US warming impacts were revised, according to the New York Times.

The Washington Post reported a page describing rising seas and shrinking Arctic ice was also removed.

President Donald Trump frequently criticises wind power and advocates for increased domestic drilling.

EPA press secretary Brigit Hirsch told the Post the agency no longer follows “left wing political agendas” or takes “marching orders from the climate cult.”

Fossil fuel and extraction industries have heavily contributed to Trump’s campaign, notes the Brennan Center.

The Republican administration has rolled back electric vehicle rules, fuel-economy standards, and other Biden-era environmental policies.

Trump also refused to send a US representative to the recent COP climate meeting in Brazil.

Climate scientist Daniel Swain called the deletions “one of the most dramatic scrubbings we’ve seen so far in the climate space.”

He warned that pages are being removed or replaced with inaccurate information. – AFP
