Malaysia targets 55,000 youths for tech skills training in 2025

KESUMA aims to train 55,000 youths in semiconductors, AI, cybersecurity and EVs next year, with RM2.3 billion already channelled for skills development

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is targeting 55,000 youths to participate in new technology skills training programmes next year.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the initiative focuses on high-growth fields like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicles.

The training will be driven by the Labour Department through full-time and part-time programmes.

“As of October this year, a total of 23,486 students have enrolled in full-time programmes,” he told the Dewan Negara.

He added that 78,558 participants have joined part-time courses across 10 technology and engineering clusters.

The Department of Skills Development is also reviewing the National Occupational Skills Standards to ensure relevance.

It is expanding modular pathways in fields such as AI, cybersecurity, and digital manufacturing.

TalentCorp has introduced the MyMAHIR.my platform and the MyMahir Skills Lab to meet industry demands.

The MyMahir National AI Council for Industry coordinates the development of the country’s AI talent.

An amendment to the PSMB Act 2001 has shortened the levy utilisation period from five years to two years.

This allows training funds to be used more effectively for skills development.

“Without the amendment, employers would take a much longer time to send their workers for training,” Abdul Rahman said.

He stated that RM2.3 billion has been channelled towards training initiatives to date.

The funding has involved 6,111 trainers and 1,516 training venues nationwide. – Bernama
