Anwar welcomes Cambodian and Thai leaders’ openness to continue talks

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomes the openness of Cambodian and Thai leaders to continue negotiations aimed at easing border tensions and preventing escalation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed appreciation for the openness of his Cambodian and Thai counterparts to continue negotiations.

He spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul yesterday regarding ongoing tensions along their shared border.

Anwar said Malaysia remains committed to supporting peaceful dialogue grounded in international law.

“While a definitive resolution has yet to be reached, sustained diplomatic engagement has ensured that no more serious incidents occurred during these critical hours,” he posted on Facebook.

He added that Malaysia would continue to support solutions that safeguard regional stability and security.

The century-long border dispute flared up again in July, leading to a five-day military clash.

Both countries agreed to a ceasefire in Kuala Lumpur on July 24 and later formalised the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord on Oct 26.

However, renewed clashes on Monday caused several deaths and displaced thousands of people.
