Three Indonesian crew rescued, three stranded on tugboat in Terengganu

Three crew members rescued after tugboat runs aground at Pantai Batu Rakit, Terengganu; three others remain stranded on board due to rough seas

KUALA NERUS: Three Indonesian crew members were rescued while another three remain stranded on a tugboat near Pantai Batu Rakit here today.

The vessel suffered damage and was carried by strong waves to the shoreline near Kampung Tanjung.

Kuala Terengganu District Police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the six crew members had departed from Songkhla, Thailand, heading for Singapore on Wednesday.

Police received a public report at 4.30 pm today about the stranded tugboat.

“Upon arriving at the location, we found a tugboat stranded along the shoreline,” Azli said in a statement.

Three crew members were rescued by members of the public before authorities arrived.

Rescue efforts for the remaining three are ongoing by police and the Fire and Rescue Department.

Azli said the operation is difficult and time-consuming due to bad weather and persistent strong waves.

Police have cordoned off the area to prevent public access.

No fatalities have been reported so far.

The three rescued crew are currently under the monitoring of the Terengganu Civil Defence Force medical team. – Bernama
