Malakoff clarifies coal unloader incident at Tanjung Bin jetty

Malakoff confirms a coal unloader, not a crane, collapsed during maintenance at Tanjung Bin Complex, with two fatalities and three injuries reported.

PONTIAN: Malakoff Corporation Berhad has clarified that the equipment involved in a fatal incident at the Tanjung Bin Complex jetty was a coal unloader, not a crane.

The company stated the unloader was undergoing maintenance and was not operational at the time of the collapse on Saturday.

The incident resulted in the deaths of two contractor workers and left three others injured.

Malakoff reported on Sunday that one of the three injured personnel has been discharged from hospital, while the remaining two continue to receive medical care.

The Tanjung Bin Complex jetty has a total of five coal unloaders, with only one affected.

The remaining four continue to operate as normal, according to the company.

Operations at the jetty and the adjacent Tanjung Bin Power Plant and Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant remain unaffected.

Malakoff assured stakeholders the incident does not impact the group’s ongoing or future projects.

An internal investigation into the incident is in progress.

The company said it is cooperating fully with relevant regulatory authorities, including the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

“As the investigation is ongoing, it would be premature to draw any conclusion at this stage,” Malakoff stated.

The company pledged to share further information once findings are confirmed.

“We are fully committed to safety, operational integrity, and transparency,” it added.
