94% of vehicles comply with emission rules, nearing the 95% target, as checks find only 6% in violation during the national operation.
SEREMBAN: Compliance with vehicle emission regulations under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 has reached 94%, nearly achieving the Department of Environment’s 95% target.
The Department of Environment’s (JAS) Operations deputy director-general Dr Norhazni Mat Sari attributed the rise to cleaner Euro 5 diesel, newer vehicle engines and regular maintenance.
During the nationwide Ops Gerak Kebangsaan, enforcement officers inspected 9,269 vehicles.
Only 567 vehicles, or 6%, were found to have violated emission regulations.
“This means only six per cent of vehicles failed to comply, breaching six rules on diesel and petrol smoke emissions, including exceeding smoke reading tests,” Norhazni said at the operation’s closing at the Mambau R&R area.
She stated that achieving 100% compliance soon is challenging, but reaching nearly 95% is a realistic and commendable outcome.
The operation demonstrated JAS’s comprehensive enforcement of environmental laws covering emissions, motorcycle noise, fuel content and refrigerant management.
All state JAS offices participated alongside agencies like the Road Transport Department, police and the National Anti-Drugs Agency.
Enforcement under the Act specifically covers emissions from diesel and petrol engines, vehicle noise, fuel content and refrigerant management.
The programme also involved senior JAS officials including Enforcement Division director Rosli Zul and Air Division director Nor Aziah Jaafar. – Bernama
