Sarawak boosts cancer centre funding by RM500 million for urgent healthcare needs

Sarawak increases its contribution to the Sarawak Cancer Centre by RM500 million, bringing total state funding to RM1.5 billion for specialised cancer treatment.

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has agreed to inject an additional RM500 million for medical equipment at the Sarawak Cancer Centre.

This increase raises the state’s total financial contribution for the centre to RM1.5 billion.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the decision addresses the urgent need for specialised cancer treatment facilities.

He stated the state government took on funding the hospital’s equipment to safeguard public welfare.

“The demand for cancer treatment continues to rise, and we are advancing the funds because more people are suffering from cancer,” he told reporters.

Abang Johari added there is a need to expedite the project’s implementation.

The federal government agreed to proceed with the centre’s construction in Samarahan Division last March.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it marked a milestone, with Sarawak being the first state to advance funds for a federal project.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the hospital is targeted for completion and full operation by 2031. – Bernama
