Malaysia’s netball team secures a hat-trick of SEA Games gold medals with a 52-49 victory over rivals Singapore in Bangkok.
BANGKOK: The Malaysian national netball team secured a golden hat-trick at the SEA Games with a hard-fought 52-49 victory over arch-rivals Singapore today.
The win at the Chantana Yingyong Stadium, Chulalongkorn University, marks Malaysia’s third consecutive SEA Games netball gold medal.
Malaysia had previously won the gold at the 2001 and 2017 editions in Kuala Lumpur and the 2019 edition in the Philippines.
Netball was not contested in the 2021 Vietnam and 2023 Cambodia Games, nor from 2003 to 2013.
This latest victory means Malaysia has now won the SEA Games netball gold four out of the five times it has been contested since its 2001 introduction.
Singapore’s sole gold medal came when they hosted the event in 2015.
National team captain Nur Syafazliyana Mohd Ali praised her teammates for not being rattled by Singapore’s pressure despite fielding many new faces.
She said the success eased her personal disappointment at missing the start of the competition due to a hamstring injury.
“This time, the feeling is different because I did not get to play,“ she told reporters emotionally.
“I suffered the injury, but my teammates did their best, and I am grateful they got the job done.” – Bernama
