Johor customs busts drug syndicate, seizes RM1.3 million in cannabis

Johor customs foiled a drug smuggling ring using courier services, seizing over 13 kg of cannabis flowers worth RM1.29 million in two separate cases

JOHOR BAHRU: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Johor has dismantled a drug smuggling syndicate operating through courier services.

Authorities seized 13.178 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers worth RM1,292,326 in two separate operations around Senai and Johor Bahru in November.

Johor State Customs director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi detailed the first case on November 26.

Acting on intelligence, a team intercepted two parcel boxes destined for the United Kingdom around Senai.

An inspection found 24 packages containing an estimated 13.043 kilogrammes of cannabis flower worth RM1,278,214.

A 21-year-old local man was charged at the Kulai Magistrate’s Court on December 3.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

In the second case on November 19, narcotics branch officers arrested a 23-year-old Filipino man.

They tracked a suspicious package addressed to an apartment in Johor Bahru.

The package contained five small transparent plastic packages with an estimated 135 grammes of cannabis flowers valued at RM14,112.

The suspect was charged at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court on November 25.

That case is being investigated under Section 6 and Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Aminul Izmeer said both syndicates used courier services as a modus operandi to avoid detection.

He urged the public not to be involved in smuggling and to help authorities combat such crimes.

He warned that smuggling harms national revenue and threatens public safety and well-being.

In a related development, Johor JKDM cracked down on 23 drug and narcotics cases from January 1 to November 30, 2025.

The total seizure value for those cases was RM4,654,916.32.

The public can report smuggling via the Customs Toll-Free Line 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest customs office.

The identity of informants will be kept confidential. – Bernama
