Bondi Beach attack victims include Holocaust survivors and a 10-year-old girl

A 10-year-old girl and Holocaust survivors were among 15 people killed at a Jewish Hanukkah festival on Bondi Beach, Sydney

SYDNEY: A 10-year-old girl and Holocaust survivors were among the 15 people shot and killed at a Jewish Hanukkah festival on Australia’s Bondi Beach.

The alleged gunmen were a father and son, with the elder, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, killed in a police shootout.

His 24-year-old son, Naveed, survived and faces multiple charges including terrorism and 15 counts of murder.

Ten-year-old Matilda died in hospital from her wounds, described by her school as “our little ray of sunshine”.

Retired mechanic Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61, were among the first victims after tackling the gunman.

Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman, 87, was the oldest victim, killed while trying to protect his wife.

Another Holocaust survivor, 82-year-old Marika Pogany, was seated in the front row when the shooting began.

Reuven Morrison, 62, was praised for trying to distract the gunmen by throwing bricks.

Tibor Weitzen, 78, was killed while shielding a friend at the event he attended with his family.

French amateur footballer Dan Elkayam was also among those killed, with President Emmanuel Macron paying tribute.

Retired police detective Peter Meagher was on a photographic assignment at the festival when he was shot.

Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, 39, was a father of four known for his charitable work and kindness.

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, known as the “Bondi Rabbi”, was a community leader and father of five.

Adam Smyth, 50, was walking on the beach with his wife when he was caught in the attack.

Anti-discrimination worker Edith Brutman was described as a “very, very passionate” advocate.

Boris Tetleroyd was killed and his son wounded, with the family describing him as a “warm, generous” man.

Grandmother Tania Tretiak, 68, was the final victim to be publicly identified from the attack. – AFP
