Russian envoy heads to Miami for Ukraine peace talks

Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev travels to Miami for Ukraine negotiations, joined by Ukrainian and European teams, mediated by Trump’s envoys.

MIAMI: Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev confirmed he was travelling to Miami on Saturday for a new round of talks aimed at settling the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian and European negotiating teams were also present in the city for the discussions.

The talks are being mediated by Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

“On the way to Miami,” Dmitriev posted on social media platform X.

He attached a short video of a morning sun shining through clouds on a beach with palm trees.

“As warmongers keep working overtime to undermine the US peace plan for Ukraine, I remembered this video from my previous visit — light breaking through the storm clouds,” he added.

The involvement of Russian and European officials together marks a progression from earlier stages.

Previous negotiations saw Americans holding separate talks with each side in different locations.

Direct talks between Dmitriev and Ukrainian or European negotiators remain unlikely, however.

Relations between the sides are described as extremely strained.

Moscow, which launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, argues European involvement hinders the process.

It frequently portrays European leaders as pro-war.

The weekend discussions follow President Vladimir Putin’s annual news conference on Friday.

Putin vowed to press ahead with his military offensive, hailing Moscow’s battlefield gains.

Trump’s envoys have promoted a plan involving US security guarantees for Ukraine.

The proposal likely expects Kyiv to surrender some territory, a prospect resented by many Ukrainians.
