MP Johari urges developer to finish Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment on time, addressing resident concerns over delays and compensation.
KUALA LUMPUR: Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has urged the developer of the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment project to complete the new residential units within the promised timeframe.
Johari, who is also the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, said some residents had vacated their original homes but claimed they had yet to receive due compensation.
“They expect to receive houses as compensation, but when the houses are not completed, problems arise,” he told reporters after launching Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 2025.
He noted some residents claimed the original agreement was signed with one company, which later sold part of its interest to a new developer.
Johari said this issue of responsibility, whether it lies with the original company or the new developer, is being examined under the agreement signed eight years ago.
He added that he had requested the Kuala Lumpur mayor to prioritise developing two residential blocks to allow traditional landowners to return quickly.
The redevelopment project officially commenced on 30 November and is expected to be completed within four years.
Former minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa had said the new units would range from 900 to 1,200 square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Dr Zaliha also announced incentives including free maintenance for the first year and a 70% discount from the second to the 10th year.
Earlier, Johari said Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 2025 will be made an annual event to promote the area as a heritage tourism destination.
The event, which concludes today, features a run, traditional food sales, cultural performances, and community activities. – Bernama
