A 61-year-old trader in Pahang lost nearly RM500,000 in a part-time job scam after being promised commissions on fake e-commerce sales.
KUANTAN: A trader lost nearly RM500,000 after falling victim to a part-time job scam promoted on Facebook.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman (pic) said the 61-year-old man was contacted in August by someone posing as an e-commerce platform representative.
The victim was given a fake link to register as a seller on the platform.
He was instructed to select products for the European market and bear upfront costs for a promised 30% commission.
“The victim made several payments totalling more than RM505,000 using Employees Provident Fund savings and personal funds,” Yahaya said in a statement.
The man initially received over RM8,300 in profits, which convinced him to continue the transactions.
Further payments were later demanded by the scammer with no additional profits received.
The victim realised he had been deceived and lodged a police report in Bentong.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
