Bodies of two missing Indonesian fishermen found in Portugal

Portuguese authorities recover bodies of two Indonesian fishermen lost after their boat sank north of Porto last week.

LISBON: Portuguese authorities have recovered the bodies of two Indonesian fishermen missing since their boat sank.

The men are believed to be among three crew members reported missing after the vessel sank on December 14.

The incident occurred approximately 100 kilometres north of the city of Porto in choppy waters.

Two other fishermen, including the vessel’s master, were rescued and hospitalised.

Many Indonesians work in Portugal’s fishing industry due to higher wages than available at home.

Portuguese and Spanish aircraft, maritime police, and lifeboat crews conducted the initial search.

The National Maritime Authority stated the two bodies were found on Sunday on beaches in the Viana do Castelo district.

The bodies were transported to a nearby forensic medical office.

Police psychologists are assisting the fishermen’s relatives. – AFP
