Elias Achouri scores twice as Tunisia beat Uganda 3-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener in rainy Rabat to top Group C
TUNISIA began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Uganda in Group C on Tuesday.
Elias Achouri scored twice either side of half-time in relentless rain at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.
Ellyes Skhiri headed in an early opener for the Carthage Eagles after just 10 minutes.
Denis Omedi netted a late consolation for Uganda with a deflected shot in stoppage time.
The result puts Tunisia top of the group on goal difference above Nigeria, who beat Tanzania 2-1 earlier.
“It was a good performance. I think we can take plenty of positives,” goalscorer Achouri said.
Tunisia are appearing at a 17th consecutive AFCON and were eager to improve on their 2024 group-stage exit.
Achouri doubled the lead before half-time with a cushioned finish from an Ali Abdi cross.
The FC Copenhagen winger completed his brace after the hour, following up a saved Abdi shot.
Uganda goalkeeper Jamal Salim could not prevent Tunisia’s third goal.
Tunisia meet Nigeria next on Saturday in Fes in a decisive Group C fixture.
Uganda will face Tanzania in Rabat as both teams seek their first points.
