Perlis speaker will formally notify the Election Commission next week of three unexpected state seat vacancies, requiring by-elections.
KANGAR: Perlis State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan will formally notify the Election Commission (EC) next week of three unexpected seat vacancies.
He said the state assembly has 21 days to inform the EC following yesterday’s announcement that the Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji seats had fallen vacant.
“We need some time to complete several matters before submitting the formal notification to the EC,” he told Bernama today.
Rus’sele announced the vacancies after the memberships of the three PAS assemblymen ceased with immediate effect, under Article 50A of the Perlis Constitution.
He stated that by-elections are necessary to fill the vacancies in the interest of government stability.
This follows reports that several Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen had met the Raja of Perlis to express a loss of confidence in Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang later stated the party had terminated the membership of its three Perlis assemblymen under the party constitution.
In the 15th General Election, PN won 14 of the 15 state seats, with PKR winning the remaining seat.
