Police hunt for inmate who escaped from Bukit Chabang rehab centre

Police launch Op Tutup with roadblocks to find a 25-year-old man who escaped from the Bukit Chabang Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre.

PADANG BESAR: Police are searching for a male inmate who escaped from the Bukit Chabang Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN).

Padang Besar district deputy police chief Supt Sarih Salleh said a report on the 25-year-old man’s disappearance was received at about 12.07 am.

The report came after PUSPEN officials found the inmate missing during a roll call at 4.15 pm yesterday.

Sarih said the centre had held a Family Visiting Day prior to the incident from 3.30 pm to 4 pm.

An inspection after the event failed to locate the inmate, who is believed to have escaped.

“Following the incident, the Padang Besar district police headquarters launched Op Tutup,” he said in a statement.

The operation involves deploying two officers and 22 personnel and setting up three roadblocks around the district.

Sarih said these measures are to tighten control and restrict the man’s movement.

The man is from Kampung Kubang Pangas, Mukim Kubang Rotan, in Alor Setar, Kedah.

He was previously convicted under Section 6(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court had ordered him to undergo two years of treatment and rehabilitation at the centre from July 8, 2025, to July 8, 2027.

The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code.

Members of the public with information are urged to contact the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters.

They can also contact Inspector Muhammad Aziq Alias at 019-6915959 to assist the investigation.
