Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomes the immediate Cambodia-Thailand border ceasefire, praising restraint and ASEAN’s role in preserving regional peace.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.

The ceasefire took effect at noon on Saturday. Anwar said the decision to halt fighting reflects a shared recognition that restraint is required, primarily in the interest of civilians.

He made the remarks in a Facebook posting. The Joint Statement sets out practical measures, including verification by the ASEAN Observer Team and direct communication between defence authorities.

“These provide a basis for stability, and I am hopeful that both sides will carry them out faithfully,” Anwar said.

He added that as Malaysia hands over the ASEAN Chair to the Philippines, it will support all efforts to ensure the undertakings are honoured. This is to preserve ASEAN’s prestige and credibility as a region of peace.

Cambodia and Thailand agreed to the ceasefire to end all border hostilities. The conflict had reignited on December 7.

The defence ministers from both countries signed a Joint Statement of the 3rd Special General Border Committee Meeting on Saturday morning.
