Malaysia’s water and energy sectors post major gains in 2024-2025

Deputy PM Fadillah highlights key water and energy sector achievements, including flood protection for 1.77 million and major renewable energy capacity.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation has recorded significant progress in strengthening the nation’s water and energy security.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof detailed the 2024-2025 achievements in a Facebook post, attributing them to strategic multi-agency collaboration.

In the water sector, the Water Efficient Products Labelling Scheme led to water savings of up to 85%.

Indah Water Konsortium operates over 7,000 sewage treatment plants with effluent compliance exceeding 97%.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage implemented 149 flood mitigation projects, providing protection for 1.77 million residents.

Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd developed 21 water treatment plants with a total capacity of 2,081 million litres per day.

It also completed Phase 1 of the Langat 2 Project, which has a capacity of 1,130 million litres per day at a cost of RM4.2 billion.

In the energy sector, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority recorded a renewable energy capacity of 3,409.64 megawatts.

The Energy Commission implemented the Large-Scale Solar 5+ programme with a capacity of 1,975 megawatts.

It also facilitated the export of 50 megawatts of green electricity to Singapore.

The sector’s performance saw the System Average Interruption Duration Index reduced to 37.36 minutes.

Regionally, the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting launched the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026–2035.

Fadillah said the achievements reflect the government’s commitment to national water and energy security.

These efforts support the national sustainability agenda and the Net Zero Carbon Emissions target by 2050.
