Iran designates the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist group in retaliation for Canada’s 2024 blacklisting of the IRGC, citing the principle of reciprocity.
TEHRAN: Iran’s foreign ministry has designated the Royal Canadian Navy a terrorist organisation.
The ministry stated the move on Tuesday was in retaliation for Canada’s 2024 blacklisting of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
It said the action was taken “within the framework of reciprocity” against Ottawa’s listing, which it called contrary to international law.
The statement did not specify what practical ramifications, if any, the Canadian naval force would now face.
Canada declared the IRGC a terrorist entity on June 19, 2024.
That designation bars IRGC members from entering Canada and prohibits Canadians from any dealings with the group.
It also allows for the seizure of any IRGC assets held in Canada.
Ottawa accused the Guards of disregarding human rights and destabilising the international order.
Canada cited the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 as a key reason for its decision.
The IRGC admitted its forces shot down the jet shortly after takeoff from Tehran in January 2020.
All 176 people on board were killed, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Canada severed diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2012, labelling Iran “the most significant threat to global peace”.
The United States listed the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organisation in April 2019.
Australia followed suit last month, accusing the force of attacks on its soil.
