Gig Workers Act 2025 officially gazetted, awaits enforcement date

The Gig Workers Act 2025 has been gazetted after Royal Assent, with its enforcement date to be announced later by the Human Resources Ministry.

PUTRAJAYA: The Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872) has been officially gazetted today.

The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) confirmed the Act received Royal Assent on December 16.

KESUMA stated the Act will only come into force on a date to be approved by the authorised minister.

This date will be specified through a finalised gazette notification.

“Accordingly, all provisions under this Act cannot yet be enforced until the effective date is officially announced,” the ministry said.

Any further announcements regarding the commencement date will be communicated via KESUMA’s official channels.

The gazetting marks a key step in strengthening Malaysia’s labour legal framework.

It specifically aims to regulate the fast-growing gig employment ecosystem.

The Act is designed to provide a more comprehensive and systematic protection framework for gig workers.

KESUMA will continue preparations for the Act’s implementation.

This includes developing subsidiary legislation and aligning governance mechanisms.

The ministry will also conduct engagement sessions with stakeholders.

These steps aim to ensure the orderly and effective implementation of the Act.

Implementation will be aligned with the realities and needs of the gig economy.

The Dewan Negara passed the Gig Workers Bill 2025 on September 9.

This passage marked a new milestone for protecting over 1.2 million gig workers in Malaysia.

It brings an end to the era where this group lacked specific legal protection. – Bernama
