Retired officer remanded for contradictory testimony in graft case

A retired district officer is remanded for allegedly giving contradictory testimony in a corruption trial involving a local council’s engineering head.

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a retired district officer to assist in an investigation.

The case involves suspected contradictory testimony given during a trial of a local authority’s Engineering Division head.

A two-day remand order was issued by Magistrate Eliana Ismail at the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court.

The remand is effective until tomorrow.

Sources say the male suspect, in his 60s, was arrested at about 11.30 am yesterday.

He was detained when he appeared to give a statement at the Kedah MACC office.

Initial investigations found the suspect gave court statements inconsistent with his earlier written ones to the MACC.

The statements were recorded in 2021 when he was secretary of the Kulim Municipal Council.

The Engineering Division head was charged in December 2021 over a company appointment.

The company, owned by a close relative, was appointed for road maintenance works.

Kedah MACC director Datuk Nazli Rasyid Sulong confirmed the arrest.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 27(2) of the MACC Act 2009.
