KOTA BARU: The police shot dead two men, high on their "wanted list" for murder, attempted murder and drug trafficking during a shootout at a house in Pasir Puteh early today.
A police inspector, corporal and a lance corporal sustained gunshot wounds in
the leg, hand and abdomen, respectively in the shootout.
The dead were identified as Hatim Mohd Zain, 25, of Kampung Padang Lati Hilir, Bachok and Mohamad Hafiz Saupi, also 25, of Kampung Marak, Kota Baru.
Two pistols - Compact CZ 75D Semi Auto and .38 Special Taurus - were found on the dead men who had been staying at the house for the past two months.
The exchange of gunfire between the law and the lawless occurred when a team from the Kelantan Narcotics Crime Investigation Department raided the house in Kampung Banggol Telipot at 4.15am.
Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said during the raid, two gunmen began firing at the police team a total of seven times before the police returned fire and killed them.
He said three policemen in the raiding team sustained gunshot wounds when the two gunmen opened fire.
"With the elimination of the two gunmen, we believe we have solved two murders, three attempted murder cases and drug-related cases in the state," he told a media conference at the Kelantan police contingent headquarters here.
Mohmad said the injured policemen were treated at the University Sains Malaysia Hospital, Kubang Kerian.
Their condition was reported to be stable. – Bernama
