Former IGP Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar dies of cancer

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar passed away today after a long battle with oral cancer.
Mohd Bakri, 66 who was treated at the National Cancer Institute, Putrajaya breathed his last at about 8.45am at the hospital.
The ex-IGP who had served as chief police officer of Sabah, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur and hailed from Manjung, Perak joined the police force in in 1971 as a cadet assistant superintendent before rising in rank.
He had also served as district police chief of Petaling Jaya, Mersing and Balik Pulau in his earlier days in the police force.
Mohd Bakri took over the reins of the police force as the seventh IGP in 2003 before retiring three years later.
He was a strict, no-nonsense officer who often stayed away from the media limelight, preferring to beef up and improve the integrity of the police force in his own silent style.
He was behind the introduction of a large white button badge donned by police personnel with the words "Saya Anti-Rasuah" (I am anti-corruption) years ago.
"He was a sincere man who was the first to initiate the clean-up of corruption in the police force. He did his best and he was always concerned about the welfare of his personnel. He was like a father to me, having guided me on how to manage the police force." said Mohd Bakri's successor, former IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan who was the late policeman's deputy before taking over the leadership of the police force in 2006.
Current IGP, Khalid Abu Bakar said Mohd Bakri's invaluable contributions to the police force will always be remembered by those who served under him and his death was a loss to the nation.
Mohd Bakri was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery at about 4pm today.
He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
