Garbage incident twist

GEORGE TOWN: The lawyer of a man detained for allegedly running over and killing a woman in an apparent tiff about garbage has denied the incident happened as claimed.
Datuk Baljit Singh said the incident started when his client, Chow Teik Leong, 53, parked his car in front of the apartment unit of housewife Lee Seok Pheng, 47, during the 12.30am incident on Nov 21.
He claimed Chow had left his car at the apartment in Bandar Baru Air Itam for about an hour before the incident and upon returning found a garbage bag on the car and another next to the vehicle.
He said his client proceeded to remove the bags and place them on the ground but was scolded by Lee and her husband for throwing rubbish.
He claimed his client decided to get away and reversed the vehicle but the husband stood in front of the car and Lee went behind the vehicle and pulled the wiper.
He said Chow then slowly moved ahead but the husband shouted when his client reached a corner and two youths with metal rods came and smashed the back and front windscreens.
Baljit claimed his client then stepped on the accelerator but did not know that Lee by then was in front of the vehicle due to the shattered glass.
"My client realised he had hit something and immediately stopped the car," he said in a press conference today after accompanying Chow's family to lodge a report at the Jelutong police station.
Baljit claimed Chow tried to flee as he feared for his life but he was overpowered by those present.
Lee succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 1.17am at the Penang Hospital while Chow is still under detention to assist in investigations.
